Naro-Minded: Suspiria

A candy-colored nightmare from Italian terror maestro Dario Argento, "Suspiria" weaves a menacing tale of witchcraft as a fairy tale gone horribly awry. From the moment she arrives in Germany to attend the prestigious Tans Academy, American ballet-dancer Suzy Banyon (Jessica Harper) senses that something horribly evil lurks within the walls of the age-old institution. Ill at ease as the result of her fellow student's peculiar behavior and increasingly terrified following a series of gruesome and spectacular murders, Suzy slowly begins to unravel the dark history of the academy. Naro-Minded: Leon: The Professional

As visually stylish as it is graphically violent, this thriller directed by Luc Besson concerns Mathilda (Natalie Portman), a 12-year-old girl living in New York City who has been exposed to the sordid side of life from an early age: her abusive father stores drugs for corrupt police officers, and her mother neglects her. Léon (Jean Reno), who lives down the hall, tends to his houseplants and works as a hired hitman for mobster Tony (Danny Aiello). When her family is murdered by crooked DEA agent Stansfield (Gary Oldman), Mathilda joins forces with a reluctant Léon to learn his deadly trade and avenge her family's deaths. (1994, R, 110mins)

Besson's first American film boasted a strong performance from Jean Reno, a striking debut by Natalie Portman, and a love-it-or-hate-it, over-the-top turn by Gary Oldman.

Léon was originally released in the U.S. in 1994 as “The Professional,” and a re-cut version was released in 1996 in France as “Léon.” Which one do you want to see?

Naro-Minded: Boogie Nights

Set in 1977, back when sex was safe, pleasure was a business, and business was booming, idealistic porn producer Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) aspires to elevate his craft to an art form. Horner discovers teenage Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg), a hot young talent working as a busboy in a nightclub, and welcomes him into the extended family of movie-makers, misfits, and hangers-on that are always around. Adams' rise from nobody to a celebrity adult entertainer is meteoric, and soon the whole world seems to know his porn alter ego, "Dirk Diggler;" but a toxic combination of drugs and egotism threatens to take him back down. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and featuring an amazing, award-winning cast, including John C. Reilly, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Don Cheadle, William H. Macy, and many more. Naro-Minded: The Big Lebowski

Set in Los Angeles, this hilarious caper from Joel and Ethan Coen stars Jeff Bridges as the Dude, a carefree seventies-style dropout who hangs out at the local bowling alley with his buddies Walter (John Goodman), a chronically irate Nam vet, and Donny (Steve Buscemi), the trio’s sweet but dim verbal foil. Although his laid-back existence is interrupted by at least three extortion and kidnapping plots, all of which revolve around an elderly millionaire in a wheelchair (David Huddleston), the Dude—who’s not only amiable but infinitely resilient—comes out smiling. There's clever dialogue, seductive camera work, and beautiful production design (the lavish dream sequences look like Busby Berkeley on Ecstasy), but in the end there’s no escaping the feeling that the Coens are speaking a secret language. With Julianne Moore and John Turturro. (1998, R, 119 mins)

Naro-Minded: Do the Right Thing

Naro-Minded brings you Spike Lee's thought-provoking and powerful comedy/drama.

Set in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, DO THE RIGHT THING chronicles the events that lead up to a race riot between the residents. On the hottest day of the year, Buggin' Out (Giancarlo Esposito) becomes upset when he sees that Sal's (Danny Aiello) pizzeria's Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. He believes a pizzeria in a black neighborhood should showcase black actors, but Sal disagrees. As the story unfolds and the temperature rises, the wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate. Sal is pushed to the breaking point and makes a fateful decision that explodes into violence. (1989, R, 120mins)
