July Film School: Sharks!

What’s up with all these sharks in movies? In contrast to complex portrayals in Hawaiian and Pacific Islander mythologies, depictions of sharks in popular culture tend to cast them as terrifying animals focused on eating people. They have also been used for comedic effect, as a counterpoint to their fearsome image. In real life, shark attacks globally are rare and are in decline. Our July Film School shows off the wide range in which sharks are depicted on film.

As always, all 25 titles selected for our monthly Film School are available to rent for half price all month long!

Free Screening: James and the Giant Peach

Presented with the Chrysler Museum of Art and the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association: a very special screening of James and the Giant Peach to commemorate the upcoming Eric Carle: Moonlit Nights & Other Illustrations exhibition.

James & The Giant Peach (1996, PG) is a mesmerizing experiment in stop-motion animation using color, form, and style to create a dazzling visual adaptation of Roald Dahl's famous children's novel. The story shares the adventures of a young boy and his unsual group of friends as they journey from England to New York inside a giant peach. This dreamlike musical feature conjures the color, imagery, and wonder found in the work of Eric Carle's picture book art. Parents and children will be able to enjoy this family film while learning to recognize Carle's influences on the visual arts and the imagination.

Game of Thrones Discussion & Analysis

Join Naro Video and Myles McNutt for an in-depth discussion and analysis of Game of Thrones and the world created by author George R.R. Martin and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Did you love the show? Were you satisfied with the series finale? Were you a fan of how the show was adapted from the books? Do you agree with Daenerys' actions in the final season? Who was the Night King and the Prince Who Was Promised? What is west of Westeros? Were the prophecies fulfilled? Will "The Winds of Winter" ever be finished?

While the show may be over, there is much to dissect and discuss! Bring your opinions and your theories as we recount 8 seasons of the smash hit HBO series with GoT expert Myles McNutt.

Dr. Myles McNutt holds a PhD in media and cultural studies, is an assistant professor at Old Dominion University, and is a TV critic at Cultural Learnings and the AV Club. His forthcoming book, Game of Thrones: A Guide to Westeros and Beyond: The Complete Series, explores the complex stories, relationships, and world building seen on the show.

The Piano Lesson: Screening & Discussion

Naro Video, in collaboration with the Norfolk Commission on the Arts and Humanities and Lambert’s Point Community Center, proudly presents a free, family-friendly screening and short discussion of the movie The Piano Lesson (1995, PG).

The plot is set in Pittsburgh in the 1930s and features an African-American family struggling over the disposition of a valuable family heirloom - an ornately carved piano deeply meaningful to all. Sister Berniece wants to keep it because of its connection to family history, but Boy Willie wants to sell it and buy the land on which their family was once enslaved. Family members are forced to take sides. This film is rated PG and may not be suitable for all children.

This film is based on the play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson. The cast is mostly comprised of the actors who played in the original Broadway stage production, including the great Charles Dutton as Boy Willie and Alfre Woodard as his sister Berneice.

Dr. Page Laws, Professor of English and Dean of the R C Nusbaum Honors College at NSU will introduce the film and lead the short discussion immediately following. Families are encouraged to attend and engage in the discussion together.

Professor Laws is a specialist on films and literature in African-American culture. She recently led a program in the Norfolk Public Schools discussing the Virginia Stage Company’s production of Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye to explore issues of racial separation and reconciliation.

This program was made possible by a grant from the Norfolk Commission on the Arts & Humanities.

The Big Lebowski @ Bearded Bird Brewing

Don your best bathrobe and put your viking helmet on to celebrate the Day of the Dude with us at Bearded Bird Brewing!

Naro Video will be presenting a very special screening of the cult classic "The Big Lebowski." The fun begins at 6:30 with trivia, improv from Push Comedy's Improv Riot: Ham & Eggs, a costume contest, and of course delicious brews from Bearded Bird. The 21 Burgers food truck will be on site with food for purchase. Prizes for trivia and best costumes courtesy of Bearded Bird and Naro Video!

The Big Lebowski, while not a critical or commercial hit when it was originally released, has amassed a loyal cult following over the past 20 years. Lebowski is now one of the most popular and quoted cult films of all time. Featuring an incredible A-list cast, groovy soundtrack, and dreamy production from the Coen Brothers and Roger Deakins (cinematographer), the film was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress in 2014. That's not just, like, our opinion, man.

Jeff `The Dude' Leboswki (Jeff Bridges) is mistaken for Jeffrey Lebowski, who is The Big Lebowski. Which explains why he's roughed up and has his precious rug peed on. In search of recompense, The Dude tracks down his namesake, who offers him a job. His wife has been kidnapped and he needs a reliable bagman. The Dude is aided and hindered by his pals Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) and Donny (Steve Buscemi). Directed by the Coen Brothers.

Naro-Minded: Stand By Me

Based on a Stephen King short story, Rob Reiner's easygoing nostalgia piece recounts the journey of four young boys set out to find the dead body of a missing child. Narrated by Richard Dreyfuss, the inseparable friends — Gordie Lachance (Wil Wheaton), Vern Tessio (Jerry O'Connell), Chris Chambers (River Phoenix) and Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) — find themselves on an adventure colored by personal pressures while they learn more about one another and their very different home lives. Just a lark at first, the boys' expedition evolves into a defining event in their lives. (1986, R, 87mins)

Naro-Minded is a monthly collaboration between Naro Cinema and Naro Video, bringing much-loved classics back to the big screen. Sponsored by O'Connor Brewing Co., beer and wine will be available for purchase at the show, with all proceeds benefiting Naro Video.
